چکیده
This study examines how the rules of origin (RoO) a free trade agreement (FTA) affect firms' pricing strategies. The value-added criterion (VAC) RoO requires firms to add more than certain level value within an FTA when use inputs originating from outside FTA. VAC may work as price floor, and resulting increases in prices can benefit all if it induces offshoring firm manipulate its output price. Meanwhile, consumer-hurting formation is possible, even make tariff-free exports. Furthermore, such worsen total welfare.

Global Supply Chains, Trade Agreements and Rules of Origin
Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) usually come with restrictions on the use of intermediate inputs in order for final goods to qualify for free trade. I focus on Rules of Origin (RoO), which limit expenses on nonmember country’s intermediate inputs. In a three-country FTA formation game, I introduce international trade in intermediate inputs and RoO restrictions. In the case of symmetric countries, ...

Rupa Duttagupta Arvind Panagariya January 2, 2001 Abstract We incorporate intermediate inputs into a small-union general-equilibrium model and develop the welfare economics of preferential trading under the rules of origin. Combining this analysis with the Grossman-Helpman political-economy model, we demonstrate that the rules of origin can improve the political viability of FTAs. Two interesti...
متن کاملReciprocity in Free Trade Agreements
We use detailed trade, tariff, and income data for countries involved in 91 trade agreements negotiated since 1980 to test for reciprocity in free trade agreements. The results offer strong evidence of reciprocity in North-North and South-South free trade agreements, but there is little empirical support for reciprocity in North-South trade agreements. In particular, after controlling for other...

This paper investigates the effects of the formation of free trade agreements (FTAs) on trade disputes. We construct a unique and comprehensive dataset on inter-country trade disputes from 1995 to 2007. The dataset covers 110 countries and 1130 trade disputes. We find that the incidences of trade disputes between two countries are positively associated with economic size, economic growth, and t...
متن کاملFree trade agreements without delocation
Small nations fear that FTAs with larger, richer nations will erode their industrial bases. These concerns are recognized in FTA and multilateral talks: small nations may explicitly or implicitly maintain higher trade barriers. Using a model where symmetric liberalization de-industrializes small, poor nations, we characterize the path of protection-asymmetries that allow liberalization without ...
